A recent study by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) reports that medical errors have been named as a leading cause of death in the United States. A “medical error” is defined by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) as “the failure of a planned action to be completed as intended or the use of a wrong plan to achieve an aim.” The term “adverse events” is more inclusive and refers to harm experienced by the patient as a result of medical care.
The BMJ study found that medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S., while also showing that adverse events are under-reported and contribute to thousands of preventable deaths per year. In a study of a random selection of hospitalizations in three hospitals, shockingly, 354 adverse events were found while the hospitals’ voluntary adverse reporting system reported only four of them.
A previous study of Medicare beneficiaries conducted by the Office of the Inspector General of HHS estimated that 13% of Medicare beneficiary hospitalizations had adverse events where patients suffered serious harm. Also, an estimated 180,000 Medicare patient deaths in one year were due to adverse events that occurred during inpatient stays.
To ensure quality medical care for all consumers, physicians and health care facilities must be held accountable for any harm or injury to patients caused by medical errors and other adverse events. The types of incidents discussed in these studies are  preventable in most cases. The experienced medical malpractice lawyers at Bonina and Bonina, P.C. are here to protect all consumers who suffer as a result of the inexcusable mistakes made by doctors and staff.
