What MeToo Has Done for Child Sexual Abuse
In 2017, after accusations of sexual abuse against film producer Harvey Weinsteincame to light, the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault went viral. The hashtag spread across social media and included attempts to highlight the prevalence of sexual abuse and sexual harassment. Tens of thousands of people have tweeted and published their #MeToo stories which involved every aspect of society including the entertainment industry and politicians.
The movement has led more and more survivors of sexual violence and harassment to come forward with their stories. But the movement has been criticized for leaving child victims behind.

Childhood Sexual Abuse Survivors

The Me Too movement was originally started in 2006 by Tarana Burke, a social activist who began using the phrase after a 13-year old girl confided in her about her sexual abuse. Burke stated that she wished she had told the girl “me too.” The movement took on new life since 2017 but has largely focused on adult men and women and their stories.
However, children are more often the victims of sexual violence and abuse. It can take childhood sexual abuse survivors longer to come forwardabout their abuse than adults. Many abusers are the people who are charged with caring for the children or are trusted adults. Child victims often feel powerless to stop the abuse and feel guilt and shame.
The #MeToo movement has been a powerful force for change for the survivors of sexual abuse and harassment, and in some ways, this has also opened the door for survivors of childhood abuse. Although the case against USA Gymnastics Doctor Larry Nassar began before the #MeToo movement went viral, a number of more high-profile victims of the doctor came forward in response to the movement. It may be easier for survivors of childhood sexual abuse to come forward if they feel part of a community of survivors and #MeToo has opened the door to that community.
