Resources for Victims of Child Sexual Abuse
Childhood sexual abuse can leave a survivor with deep scars. The mixture of confusion, shame, anger, and depression can take decades to work through. Childhood sexual abuse is far too common, and unfortunately, many survivors never come forward. Survivors shouldn’t have to suffer alone. If you are a survivor of childhood sexual abuse whether it was at the hands of a family member, a teacher, a coach, a clergy person, or another trusted individual there are resources available to get you the help you need.

Hotlines

  • National Sexual Assault Hotline—when you call 800-656-HOPE you will be directed to your local Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) affiliate. You will receive help accessing free services such as confidential support to assist you in locating health services and long-term counseling. Calls are confidential, and you can receive helpful information about resources and in your area.
  • New York State Hotline for Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence—call 800-942-6906 to be connected with a trained victim advocate who can provide confidential support and connect you with in-person and follow-up services
  • Safe Horizon—at 800-621-HOPE you can reach trained counselors available to talk about your situation no matter how long ago it occurred. Safe Horizon can also confidentially help you figure out the next step. You can also receive in-person services at their Brooklyn or Manhattan offices by appointment.

Support Groups and Counseling

Being part of a community of people who understand can be an important part of the healing process for some survivors. Support groups for survivors of childhood sexual abuse can be found throughout the city. In addition, online support groups can be found through organizations such as Yes ICAN and 1 in 6, an organization that helps male survivors of sexual abuse.
In-person counseling with a professional provider can also be helpful for survivors coping with the aftermath of childhood sexual abuse. A counselor who specializes in working with survivors of sexual abuse can help an individual cope with some of the long-term effects.
